When tasked to re-design a standard hand tool for a fictional persona, my mind immediately jumped to Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. Inspired by the character George, I created the persona Rowan Hayduke: an ex-systems engineer turned eco-terrorist, living in a corporate-controlled, AI-driven power structure called The Grid. On her mission to tear down The Grid and allow nature to reclaim the Earth, I created her a hatchet with blunt edges to smash screens and a sharp blade to slice through wires, made from reinforced bridal veil mushrooms; she has the strength to survive.
